Meal Replacement Shakes Do They Have A Place in Your Diet?
Most meal replacement shakes tell you to use them to replace 2 meals per day, and then eat a low-calorie 3rd meal, and presto, you will lose weight by virtue of eating far fewer calories. Does this work? Well, it is true that most of these shakes contain around 250 calories, far fewer than most of us eat in one meal. And some studies have shown that people using them lose more weight than those who don’t (however, we’re pretty sure we know who funded those studies). And the studies never tell you about the long-term results. We’re pretty sure we could tell you that many of these are some of the “rebound” dieters who gain back the weight, and then some.
We Were Designed to Eat Food in Our Diet!
In addition, most of us cannot stay on a liquid diet for long. We were designed to eat and chew and enjoy our food, and a liquid diet just doesn’t cut it. Furthermore, let’s take a look at the ingredients of some of these shakes: A major meal replacement shake has as it’s three principle ingredients, skim milk, sugar and fructose. If you’ve been reading the rest of our website, you know that skim milk is what farmers use to fatten up their pigs, and you need the fat in the milk to properly utilize the fat-soluble vitamins as well as the calcium! (See the Low-Fat Diet Section and the Saturated Fat Section). And as for the sugar and fructose, this is just NOT what your body needs!
Synthetic Vitamins in Meal Replacement Shakes
In addition, most of these shakes add in synthetic vitamins, to make sure you get some of the vitamins that you would otherwise be eating from your food. You’d actually get a lot more nutrients if you just drank some raw, whole milk, but we’re not recommending that either, as we think you should be eating food!
Too Few Calories in the Diet, So Many Lose Muscle, Not Fat!
Last, but not least, many people following such a low calorie diet end up losing muscle instead of fat, and don’t feel good at all because they are eating too much sugar and not enough calories. It is far better to lose weight slowly and change the foods you eat for life, so that the weight not only comes off in a healthy way, but stays off!
