Obesity & Diet Foods

More Diet Foods, More Obesity

2 Out of Every 3 Adults Are Overweight or Obese - Is It The Diet Food?

Around the turn of the century, there were NO diet foods.  Let us phrase that in another way, NO ONE was eating diet foods.  And very few people were overweight.  And fewer still were obese.  According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, in 1999-2000, an estimated 64% of adults in the United States were either obese or overweight.  That’s almost 2/3 of the adult population!  As recently as 1991, only 12% of adults were obese.  Now it's 30%!

1 Out of 3 Children Overweight

1/3 of our children are now overweight as well, and these figures are increasing.  In the past 30 years, the number of overweight children has doubled.  In just the past decade, the number of obese people in the U.S. has gone up 2 ½ times.   Fifty years ago, only a small percentage of the population had problems with their weight.  Now it’s an epidemic!  All this has happened while we have greatly increased the number of so-called “diet” foods in our diets, including diet sodas, diet chips, diet or low-fat dinner entrees and more.  Hmm, that would seem to indicate that diet foods don’t help you to lose weight!

Does Eating Diet Food Help You To
Lose or Gain Weight?

According to Dave Grotto, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, "Diet food sales are growing, but so are our waistlines--rates of obesity in this country are increasing each year”.  Many other nutritionists would agree with him.  However, with another statement of his, many nutritionists may disagree.  We certainly do:  "Many of these foods can play a role in a healthy diet, but by themselves, they're not the magic bullet that can lead to permanent weight loss."  Hmm, it's interesting to us to look at the sponsors of the American Dietetic Association.  They include Unilever (I Can't Believe It's Not Butter®, Klondike®, Popsicle®, Slimfast®, & Wishbone®), Aramak (manages dining facilities and vending machines with candy, chips and soda), Kellogg's® (cereals, cookies, crackers, fruit snacks, Pop Tarts®) and General Mills.  You've got to decide who you're going to believe, the companies who stand to gain if you eat their foods?

We are here to tell you that from all the evidence we have seen, diet foods are NOT the answer.  They are NOT going to help you lose weight over the long term.  You will be far better off adopting a real, whole foods diet that will bring you more health and vitality!
