Low Iodine & The Thyroid

Low Iodine Levels in Diet
Can Cause Thyroid Problems

It’s generally accepted that low levels of iodine in our diet can cause low functioning thyroids.  That’s why iodine is added to our salt.  However, refined table salt, with iodine added, may not be the best delivery system.  Some natural sources of iodine that seem to be well used by the body include unrefined sea salt like Pink or Celtic Sea Salt, kelp, bladderwrack and other seaweeds, and other foods like eggs, butter fat, and most sea-foods, especially cold-water deep-sea fish.  Fish sauce is also a rich source of iodine if properly prepared, and is often used in Thai cuisine.  However, most of us are not eating very many of these iodine-rich foods in our diets today.

Iodine Blockers in our Diet in Foods Like Peanuts and Soy Can Cause Thyroid Problems

Besides eating iodine-rich foods, it is important to slow down or top eating goitrogens (iodine blockers) like peanuts and soybeans in our diet.  This would include to stop eating soybean oil, which is found in most packaged foods today including salad dressings, cookies, prepackaged dinners, and also most restaurant foods.  All raw cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage are also goitrogens.  Make sure and cook or culture these foods before eating in significant amounts in your diet.

Added Fluoride in Diet May Affect Thyroid

According to Cherie Calboun in The Coconut Diet, a growing body of evidence suggests that fluoride may interfere with proper functioning of the thyroid as well.  This means that if your water is fluoridated, it may be extremely helpful for you to buy a water filter that filters out the fluoride.  If you’re not sure, check with your water supplier – about 50% of American’s tap water is fluoridated today.  You also want to avoid fluoride toothpastes, since some of it inevitably will be ingested – try brands like Weleda and Peelu.  See the Resource Section for recommendations on fluoride water filters and suppliers of Weleda and Peelu.
