High Fructose Corn Syrup Is Cheap & Used Often in Packaged Foods

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is being used more and more often - it’s inexpensive and now contained in many, if not most, packaged goods, including items you find in the “health” isle or store, like “natural” sodas or energy bars.  Pure fructose, just like refined cane sugar, is stripped of all its vitamins, minerals & enzymes.  Many of these nutrients are needed by your body just to metabolize and digest the sugar that you eat in your diet, so eating refined sugar, whether in the form of cane sugar or fructose, will deplete your body of B vitamins, magnesium, zinc and many other nutrients.  As such, it is not just an “empty” calorie, but a “negative” calorie food and has no place in a healthy diet.

Eating HFCS in the Diet Can Lead to Heart & Immune System Problems

In addition, HFCS contains a lot of free or unbound fructose that has been shown to cause problems with the hearts’ use of important minerals such as chromium, magnesium & copper.  This can lead to blood clots, high cholesterol & more.  Eating fructose in your diet, like sucrose or sugar, has also been shown to reduce immune system function, interfering with the function of white blood cells.

HFCS May Even Cause Diabetes or Make it Worse

Although recommended for diabetics in the past, fructose also makes insulin work less well, which can lead to or exacerbate diabetes.  It also increases uric acid in the body, which can be an indicator of heart disease.  Last, but not least, eating fructose and foods containing refined fructose in the diet appears to accelerate aging.

Fructose In Your Diet May Be Making You Fat

Fructose also converts to fat more easily than other sugars, which may be part of the reason why Americans are gaining so much weight.  High fructose corn syrup is the main sweetener in sodas, which are consumed by Americans at the rate of over 41 gallons per year per person.

We should all eliminate or severely reduce the amount of refined sugar we eat in our diet today, but the research shows that refined fructose and high fructose corn syrup are actually more dangerous than refined sucrose and should be taken out of your diet today.
