Eating Fat-Free Diet Foods

Fat-Free Diet Foods
Do They Help You Lose Weight?

Well, judging by the sales of fat-free diet foods, they should be helping people to lose weight like crazy.  Fat-Free diet foods have been around since the 1980’s, and sales were over $35 Billion in 2005, far above other categories like low-carb.  I guess this means that most people still believe the often chanted mantra about cutting the fat out of your diet to help you be more healthy and to lose weight.  However low fat diets have been proven to NOT work, so we’d imagine that fat-free diet foods won’t help you very much.  In addition, fat is a necessary nutrient for your body.

A recent Harvard Medical School study showed that following a low fat diet (20% of calories) can cause you to actually GAIN weight.  For more info on low-fat diets and how they DON’T work, please see our section on low-fat diets.  In addition, fat-free diet foods, like other processed foods, have lots of problems with them.

Added Sugars in Fat-Free Foods in Your Diet

Lots of Fat-Free (and low-fat) diet foods have added sugars, as well as chemicals.  Fat gives a lot of taste to foods, so if you take out the fat, manufacturers have to do something, or no one would buy it!  This can be a big problem for your health and weight over the long term.  Eating lots of fat-free foods laden with sugar can cause insulin resistance, high triglycerides and even diabetes.

We Often Eat More When Foods are Fat-Free

In addition, many of these foods are not inherently satisfying, and so often we eat them in much larger quantities, and can actually end up eating more calories than if we had just stuck with normal, full-fat foods. We often think too, “oh, it’s fat-free”, “it’s a diet food”, so “it’s OK to have more”, but this is simply not true.

Fat-Free Diet Foods Have Missing Nutrients

Fat is a necessary nutrient, even saturated fats, and in addition, the fat-soluble vitamins are found in large quantities only in foods with large amounts of saturated fats in them.  So if you eat a lot of fat-free foods, you will be missing nutrients that your body needs.  For more on this, see our saturated fats section.
