Diet Soda

The Problems with Diet Sodas

Diet Soda Consumed by 1/2 of Adults

Diet soda is probably the #1 diet food that people are consuming in today’s world.  According to the Calorie Control Council's 2004 survey, 49% of American adults consume diet soda.  So that means 1 out of every 2 adults drink diet soda.  What’s wrong with diet soda, you ask?  Well, let’s start with the list of ingredients:

The typical ingredient list of diet sodas includes:

  • Aspartame, Saccharin or Sucralose
  • Caramel Color
  • Caffeine
  • Sodium Benzoate
  • Phosphoric Acid
  • Natural Flavors (ie, MSG)

Aspartame in Diet May Cause Many Serious Problems

Aspartame (NutraSweet® & Equal®) in diet sodas has been implicated by some scientists and medical professionals in possibly causing serious diseases like brain tumors and lesions.  It has also been blamed for all sorts of neurotoxic side effects, such as seizures, headaches, dizziness, mood disorders, anxiety and more.  Saccharin and sodium benzoate are carcinogenic.  Sucralose, the new artificial sweetener for diet sodas and many other foods, has not been studied extensively on humans, and concerns have been raised about the possible adverse effects of its use on the thymus gland, an organ that helps the immune system function properly.  Sucralose has also been accused of causing drug-like feelings of disorientation and confusion, depression and anxiety, diarrhea, fatigue, headaches and more.

Natural Flavors Often Contains MSG, a Known Neurotoxin

"Natural Flavors" is really another term for MSG, a known neurotoxin.  Ingestion of too much Phosphoric Acid is implicated in causing osteoporosis and is probably a significant cause of the increase in fractures we see in teenage girls today.

Diet Soda Stimulates Appetite & May Cause Weight Gain

Many articles and studies have shown that aspartame in diet sodas actually stimulates the appetite and causes carbohydrate cravings.  The American Cancer Society has documented that people who use artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose actually gain more weight than those who do not use them.  So if you are using diet soda, you are probably endangering your long-term health, and NOT losing weight anyways!  So, STOP USING DIET SODAS TODAY!
