The Cholesterol Myth Does Eating Cholesterol Rich Foods In Your Diet Cause Problems? Does Having Higher Blood Cholesterol Really Put You At Risk?
60% of Heart Attacks Happen To People With Normal Cholesterol
Well, perhaps contrary to what you may think, more than 60% of heart attacks happen to people with normal blood cholesterol levels. So the majority of people with high cholesterol never have a heart attack! In fact, 1/2 of all heart attack victims don’t have any of the standard heart disease “risk factors” including high cholesterol, obesity, smoking or family history.
In addition, no study exists that demonstrates that high blood cholesterol causes heart disease. In fact, many people who do not have high blood cholesterol die of heart disease every year. Could it be that it is other foods in the diet that are causing more of the problem? The French Paradox Lots of Fat, Cream & Butter in the Diet & Less Heart Disease
You may have heard of how the French eat lots of saturated fats and cholesterol-rich foods in their diets in the form of cheese, butter, cream, eggs, liver, meat and rich pates and sauces. However, according to an article in the New York Times, Nov. 17, 1991, by Molly O’Neill, the rate of heart disease in France is less than ½ that of Americans: 315 out of every 100,000 middle-aged men die of heart attacks in America each year – in France, only 145 per 100,000. Further, in the Gascony region of France, where high amounts of goose and duck liver and fat are eaten in the diet, the rate is 80 per 100,000. This, despite the fact that, according to a study by Dr. Serge Reynaud, the people of Gascony eat more saturated fat in their diet than any other group of people in the industrialized world! A paradox, or are the “saturated fat is bad” theories wrong? We think the latter.
