Eat Limited Amounts of Properly Prepared Complex Carbohydrates When Trying To Lose Weight

Grains are High in B & E Vitamins, Magnesium, Zinc & More

Grains are high in B vitamins, vitamin E and magnesium, nutrients that are often low in American diets, so they are good foods to include in your diet if you are not allergic to them or gluten intolerant.  Always eat grains and starchy vegetables with some good quality fat like coconut oil or butter, however, and limit the quantity to 1 slice of bread or ½ cup of grains per meal while you are trying to lose weight.  Here are some of the complex carbohydrates that are good for you to eat:

  • Whole-Grain Sourdough Breads
  • Brown Rice
  • Wheat Berry Casserole
  • Oatmeal
  • Quinoa
  • Starchy Vegetables like Squash and Potatoes
  • Fresh Fruit

NOTE:  Often low carb dieters cut out all or most grains, and end up craving them.  This may be because of nutrients such as B vitamins that your body needs that are in unrefined grains that are missing in your diet if you are too restrictive concerning grains.  This is why we recommend a moderate consumption of complex carbohydrates.

Properly Prepared Grains Can Be Good for Your Diet

If you look back at the history of people eating grains, you will see that traditionally, many groups of people soaked or cultured their grains before eating them.  This means soaking the grain overnight before cooking it the next day, or in the case of bread, making real sourdough bread where the sourdough helps to reduce the phytates in the grain.  Phytates can bind with certain minerals like zinc and magnesium, and if you eat a lot of whole grains, but do not properly prepare them, you may end up mineral deficient.  For more info and recipes, see Sally Fallon’s book, Nourishing Traditions.
